Chapter 12 “Explore Careers”
I want a career that makes me happy and that I can make a lot of money. I also want to be able to have fun while I’m working. I don’t want to wake up everyday and be mad at myself that I have to work. I’m very helpful, friendly, quick learner, dependable, and hard working. My ideal job is to work with children or in an office with a lot of people. I don’t want a boring office job, but a fun and active office job. I have great listening and teamwork skills. As for writing and speaking, it’s in the middle. As long as I land a job that I really love, that’s all that matters. Even if I won’t make a lot of money, I will still be stratified with the career I land in the future. I just need to make enough and a little extra to own a car, house, and enough to pay my bills.
Chapter 11 “Be a Great Money Manager”
Money, money, money, I love money. But sadly, I have no money because college is very inexpensive, NOT. I don’t think I spend too much money because I don’t. That’s not one of the reasons why I’m broke. I’m lucky that I don’t have a credit card because there the interest rates on that thing are ridiculous! My mom told me to never charge anything on a credit unless it’s an emergency. Using a credit card at the mall isn’t an emergency. My uncle has been using his credit card since forever and it has been building up. He owes more than what he spends, so this makes me not want a credit card. I will only use it for medical emergency or something useful. Open a bank account that has a checking and savings. Start to save money, so when there’s a real emergency, you can use that instead of the credit card. Credit card may be tempting to have because you can charge it anywhere and buy anything. Bad part that college students don’t understand is that the credit card companies have interest rates.

Chapter 10 “Take Charge of Your Physical and Mental Health”
Just by reading the title, I know what I need to do to succeed in college. We need to take charge of our health, by exercising daily and eating right. Also, students should have a goods night sleep. In college, especially if students live on campus, they will tend to gain more weight than students who live off campus. The food here is really greasy and they don’t care what you eat. It’s like an all you can eat buffet inside the dinning common here at SJSU. Everything is oily, fried, and greasy. It’s our choice to choose the right food to eat. Living healthy means no smoking or taking any harmful drugs. I do not take any type of drugs, what so ever. Always try to relax and not have too much stress because it can lead to suicide.

Chapter 8 “Succeed on Tests”
First thing students need to do in order to succeed on tests is to control their test anxiety. I went to a test anxiety workshop not long ago. To get a good grade on the test, students have to talk positive, exercise regularly, and make time. A tip to having a good score on the test is to master the multiple choices, true of false, fill in the blank, short-answer and essay questions. It’s not that hard to take a test after students master it. I have test anxiety because I cram all of the information the day or two before the test. This is one of the things students shouldn’t do because it falls under procrastination. Always go over the notes taken in the class everyday so it can process in the brain. Main tip to scoring a high score on the test is to know what material is going to be on the test. One great tip; never cheat because it lowers your self-esteem and self-respect.

Campus MovieFest
I’m really glad that I went to Campus MovieFest on Friday, because I got to see really cool short films that students made. They made it look like a real movie premiere, with a red carpet and a background to take pictures. I attended the moviefest with Mynesha, Joel, Patrick, Ryan, my suite-mate Lilly and my sister Stephanie. CMF was created by three college students on the East side of the U.S. About 146 teams had signed up, but only 16 teams made it into CMF finale night. I really loved the short clip of outside the box and fun scare. Both show was hilarious and I couldn’t stop laughing. I can tell that my sister enjoyed CMF a lot because she couldn’t stop laughing when they showed the movie fun scare. It was about these girls who were running away from a killer. No need to decide, but fun scare won best comedy. Le Glueton Rouge won best picture and Conversation on Salinger took home best drama.

Chapter 7 “Enhance Your Study Skills and Memory”
Chapter 7 is about memory and studying skills. Studying may be the number one procrastinated thing that most college students done. We have to study almost everyday to suck the information into our brain. I don’t have a sleeping disorder, nor do I have learning disability. To enhance your study skills, you need to improve your memory by attending the class and concentrating. To build study skills, form a study group and teach other valuable information. If one of my group members from the study group is always on her cell phone, I think we have to have a talk with her. It’s time to study at least for an hour and if she can’t keep her hands off of her phone for one hour, she has a disorder. I think I will tell her to stop using her phone because we barely have time to study. If it’s constantly repeating, then she’s out of the group. Memory is one of the greatest skills you need to succeed in college. If you cant memorize any materials that the professor has taught you, then something is wrong. If I forgot where I places my car keys at, I would have to retrace my steps back one at a time.
"Help me!! I have test anxiety” workshop
I know I’m not the only one who feels anxiety when taking a test. I thought that this workshop was well presented by Veronica P. Mendoza from counseling services. Test anxiety occurs before and during the test and occurs when stress is excessive to the point it hinders the ability to perform. Test anxiety is normal is you didn’t prepare for a test, but if you did prepare and still have anxiety, then something is wrong. Do you get sweaty palms, headache, rapid heartbeat, and shakiness? That’s how anxiety affects you. It affects you because you are unprepared and having negative talks such as “I’m going to fail this test”! We just have to reduce anxiety by being prepared, having positive self-talk, and taking care of ourselves. The number one key to reduce anxiety is to sleep and exercise. All you need to do is to breathe in and out a couple of times to reduce stress and testing anxiety. After taking a test, reward yourself for motivation.

Chapter 6 “Take It In: Notes and Reading”
Chapter six is mainly about taking in note and reading strategies. This is the only way that we as students can succeed in college if we take good notes, and concentrate such as the 4 C’s. The only way we can succeed in college is to take great lecture notes and be in class to listen. We have to always pay attention and take notes, so there is no time for daydreaming. There are a couple of ways to take lecture notes, which are, summarize, outline, Cornell method, question technique, and concept maps. I prefer to use the Cornell note style because it’s more organized and easier to read. I used to be so unorganized, until I stared using Cornell note style. Since then, I’ve been really good at taking notes and it really helps me out a lot. I learned to not take a lecture note of every little thing that comes out of a professor’s mouth because most of the information is unnecessary. We have to not only take good lecture notes, but to take good reading notes also. I would highlight the important part of the book, or use sticky notes. If I wanted to write in the book, I would use a pencil so I can erase it later on. We just have to adjust to this learning style if we haven’t already because it’s very useful for your future workplace.

Tape Party
Well, I just attended the tape party here on campus, CVC dorm to be specific. There were a couple of creativity going on here on the 6th floor. My roommate and I didn't know what to draw, so we came up with a theme, which was Halloween because it's already October. We had a roll of used tape, so it wasn't enough. We needed to make a witch, haunted house, and a cat, but the tape wasn't enough. Here are some creative tape drawings that people did.

Anna is the BOMB
Anna White is a useful Peer Mentor in the Get Internet Famous Muse class. She has been in the class as a peer mentor, but it feels like she’s a student in that class. Whenever she talks, I would know what she is talking about. She’s very kind, and helpful. She’s young, and I can relate to her. I’m so thankful that Anna is a peer mentor in this muse class because if Mynesha didn’t get to add this class. Reason being is that I would feel weird because the boys dominated the class. I can go to Anna for help with homework or maybe to even talk and socialize. I can also go to other peer montors at the center and ask for help with other homework that I have. Muse class has helped me transition from high school to college because muse classes are specifically for new freshmen’s. I feel that the class is going at a steady speed and it’s going to get faster as we go. It’s a good way to transition from high school speed to college speed.

Chapter 5 “Expand Your Thinking Skills”
As I was reading this chapter, I was thinking to myself, that my thinking skills are really poor. I need to bump it up a lot more. When I did the critical difference assessment, I found out that I am a mix of styles. I feel that I am very creative when it comes to designing posters and decorating. I love to go all out with stickers and other art supplies that I can afford.
One of the thinking skills we as an incoming freshman to San Jose State, is that we had to think and make a hard decision. I know that we were all accepted to other colleges, but we chose to attend SJSU. Why is that? The reason I chose this school was because SJSU is one of the better CSU’s in the Bay area. I had friends that attend the school and they said it’s a good school, so I went on their opinion and my research. All in all, I have to expand my thinking skills. I feel that I lack on my thinking skills and I have to bring it up.
Chapter 4 “Diversify Your Learning Style”
In chapter 4, I learned my greatest strength and weaknesses as a learner. I have a preference for learning through the sense of seeing and hearing. Other classmates will have different preferences because they have other styles of learning and absorbing information. One of the strengths I’ve identified is in the category of interpersonal (psychology, sociology, nursing). I’m not sure of what major I’m leaning towards, but I was thinking about education and it’s the total opposite of interpersonal intelligence. The sensory preference that works best in this major is visual learning. I noticed that, that’s the category I have most strength in and my weakness is in the category of spiritual/existential. As I said before, I’m a visual and auditory learner. I have to have a professor that lectures, and explain thoroughly. Also, for learning, I learn best by reflecting on my own personal experiences, or others. To be a good learner, first thing to do is ask questions.

On my way to Portland Oregon
I just arrived in Oregon at 4 in the morning on a Friday. I’m so excited that I finally get to go to Oregon! I’ve been in my mom’s car for so long for about 11 hours or so, I feel numb. When we left, there was traffic and that was bad enough. The road over here is so curvy and particularly in the dark, you can’t see anything. It’s just pitch black and daunting. As we drive forward, there are no cars in front, and while we turn our heads back, there are also no cars. It’s like we are the only ones on the planet. If you ever been to Lake Tahoe or Santa Cruz, that’s how the road looks like. I don’t know how others do it, but they drive very fast in this kind of road and they seem to know it well. It’s probably because we aren’t used to curvy roads at dark because the Bay Area barely have freeways like this. We made an exit for gas at this place who knows what’s it called, but it looks like a place you would see in a scary movie, such as “House of Wax, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. So the smart thing we did was drive back onto the freeway and waited until we made it to a city. Did you know that there is no self-service in gas stations here in Oregon? It’s so strange because we have self-service in California.
I was so eager to see the “Welcome to Oregon” sign; I fell asleep and missed it. I always take a picture of every state I’ve been to. I took pictures of Nevada, California, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and Texas signs. So continuing my story, I woke up 5 seconds after we passed the sign. I tried really hard to stay awake, but I just dozed off for a bit. GRRRRR. As we kept driving after entering Oregon, we haven’t seen any houses. It’s all trees. No wonder they have a tree logo on their license plate. Ha-ha. After I woke up, my little sister and I started to have a karaoke party in the car. We started singing all of the songs we had on our iPod. Surprisingly, my little sister who is 7 knows more song than my sister who is 25! The car ride sucked and I prefer to take the plane on my next trip to Oregon.

look me in the eyes please? (chapter 9)
In high school, my English teacher made the class write a speech and read it aloud to the class. One of the few mistakes I seen in the classmates, was that they never made eye contact to the audience. It was always staring at their note cards. For giving a good speech, you have to give eye contact, and connect with the audience and always practice before it’s your turn. I always get a good night sleep and then work on my speech or essays. It works best for me to get sleep so my brain can get re-focused.

I feel so left out :( Two more days of college and I'm back with my little sister. I still don't know what to get her as a birthday gift! Any suggestions for a 7 year old girl? Love you BIG girl! xOxoXo your bee

Chapter 3
Managing time can be hard and I know everyone hasn’t used a time managing plan. It's actually very easy to manage time, after reading this chapter. Nowadays, it's all technology, so by any chance, if you have a blackberry or a smart phone, it's a good time managing phone. That's why I'm getting a blackberry on my birthday! I felt that I spend too much time on the computer, phone, and chilling. I felt that I spend too little time on reading, and homework. The most important things I have to work on to be a great time manager is to keep up with homework and managing computer time use. Are you a procrastinator? I know I am a procrastinator but I don’t procrastinate so much that I have to go get counseling.
The strengths that I have regarding time is that I can plan very well and I have plenty of extra time in my schedule that I don’t use very well. My weakness to managing time is that I usually forget to do them until it’s needed to be done. I really need to remember to do what is needed to be done. The bad habit I’m going to get rid of is surfing the web, using MySpace, Facebook and all of the other network sites. I feel that I spend most of my time there and I really don’t want to feel like that. I rather go outside and communicate with others. For spending less time on the computer, I can spend more time working on my homework, or even studying. When I put Swiss cheese in to action, I had more time to work on my homework and I stopped using the web for a while. I limited myself on how long I can use the Internet. My way of calling Swiss cheese is plow the farm. You have to make holes and plant seeds in it. You have to work on it one at a time and that’s what really counts if you take it slow and easy but get it don’t by the due date.
When you say something that you need to do, be more precise, such as I’m going to start getting to school on time by leaving the house an hour earlier than I used to leave. A couple more examples would be, I plan to watch TV for one hour and after my TV hours, I’m going to study. I will make a weekly plan and do exactly what I put on the paper. You have to be more precise, or else you wont know what to do or how to do it. It’s like you need the 5 W’s when making plans. I spend more than 3 hours on homework every week. It relates to my goals because I want to have more study time than chilling and sleeping. The reason why I don’t do homework as much is because I like sleeping, who doesn’t? I’m changing that bad habit now.
Chapter 2
Am I lonely? Are you lonely? I thought I was lonely, but after the self-checklist, I found out that I wasn’t after all. Chapter two talks about good communication and building relationships.
I have a very strong bong with my roommate because I know her. We went to high school together and also knew each other since we were little. I guess we spent so much time together; that we act like one another and share the same likes and dislikes. I never had experience with discrimination. One of my friends did though, because he’s gay and people we’re so cruel to him. They called him Barbie and turned on the Barbie girl song every time. No one did anything about it and it was so sad to see what I had seen. Something about his face looked like something sucked the life out of him when people called him names. I really don’t have a problem with different sexual orientation other than mines. We are all the same people and all that’s different is that we will date different people. I never heard anyone discriminate me, but who knows, people talk trash behind our backs all the time.
I noticed that I met many people that I share similarities to and I think it’s a good think. Jasmine is one of my friends that I talk to a lot and we have many things in common. First of all, we’re friends so that’s a common thing right? We both speak a second language, attend a CSU, and loves babies. I attended the Spartan kick off with my roommate and we met other people there. I met this girl named Maria, and she’s really easy to talk to. She’s very nice, unlike other people. We both love traveling and we’re thinking about going to Miami together.
Some different ways people can communicate is by writing, or giving touches or face expressions. For example, you can lift an eyebrow for disbelief, or shrug your shoulders, like you don’t know. Face expressions and body posture are different, according to different people. I think that I communicate well, but sometimes it feels like I don’t. I have to ask more questions if I don’t understand something and speak up. That’s what I notice this past week because I don’t ask questions, and when I get home, I’m stuck on an assignment.
Go Spartans
Mime Game
Wow, I never played this game before. It was really fun to do this assignment with Matt. At first we were both like, what the hell are we suppose to do. It was funny and weird. We did a lot of hand movements and turned around a couple of times. When I was the mirror, I didn’t expect what Matt was going to do. You really have to observe very well, to mimic what Matt was going to do next. At first it was really uncomfortable because we didn’t know each other but after 30 seconds of playing this game, I felt comfortable. I figured out what feelings Matt felt, which was so easy. He just shrugged his shoulders and had a confused face. I learned a lot being a mime and a mirror. We couldn’t talk or have any type of communication. The only communication we had was our face expressions, and body movements. We had to be on the same page and just communicate. When I go home this weekend, I think I will show this game to my little sister. I can already hear her giggling.
Nutrition 101 Muse Workshop
“Don’t just eat, eat better” is the slogan for the nutrition workshop. Cory and Hector were the presenters for this workshop and I think they did a good job presenting because I understood what they were actually talking about. There are five secrets to eating healthy; the first secret is to not let yourself get too hungry. Second secret is to eat three kinds of food in each mean. Third secret is to choose natural or whole wheat only. Fourth secret is to avoid the good or bad trap, so make 90% of your choices high. Last but not least, use the food guide pyramid. A daily diet is a mixture of 2000 calories. You must eat whole grain, vegetables, and fruits for a daily diet of 2000 calories. It’s not so hard to go on a daily diet of 2000 calories. All you need to do is make good choices. Examples of making good choices would be choosing grilled over fried, eating real fruits instead of drinking fruit juices or even jamba juice. I learned that jamba juice is not good for you, but that’s all right because I barely drink jamba. I really learned a lot from this workshop and I think I will try to make the best choices for my health.
Library Tour
I learned a lot from the library tour we had a few days ago. Paul Kauppila, one of the 20 librarians at MLK library, talked about why the library is a great reference to use when you have a research project or any type of projects to do. First of all, I would like to mention that the room we were in was awesome. The room had flat screens and it just looked like a relaxing place to stay in. Kauppila talked mostly about how to search for books, articles, magazines and etc online. The reason why he showed us that is because we have a scholarly paper due at the end of the semester, so he showed us how to get our references. There are 8 floors in the library plus a basement, so that makes nine floors. If you are in the library and forgot to bring your laptop or if you don’t have one, go down to the basement and they will loan you one for 4 hours. You can reserve study rooms upstairs, but to reserve a room you will need a library card. I finally signed up for a library card on the day of the tour.
So not a morning person
My title practically said it all. I really don't like getting up in the morning, but I have to. I just want to hop onto the bed and snooze for one more hour! Well, off to breakfast and then my first class of the day. I hope I don’t fall asleep in class.

Chapter 1 (Know yourself/Your journal)
Chapter 1 Know yourself
A campus resource that meets my need is the career service center, which is located in Mod F and building q. I would also need the financial aid office, which is located on 9th street. I didn’t have as many checks on the “Is the online coursework for me” section. So I think that online coursework isn’t for me. The activity I enjoy the most is cooking. I love watching my grandmother and mother cook. When I’m doing what I want to do, I see myself shopping! I like to play and teach my little sister some educational and useful things she can use during her school year. My hobbies are: listening to the music, playing with my puppy, spending quality time with my family, ice skating, eating, playing laser tag and many more exciting things. The possible major that relates to my hobbies would be in education because I love kids and teaching them. The most possible career for me would be becoming a teacher.
Chapter 1 Your Journal
The person who has helped me the most on campus so far is my English teacher. She has taught me the correct way to write a 5-paragraph essay. The aspect of college that I need most help with right now is finding a job, so I can support myself because like I said before, I’m an independent person now. The person on campus, who can help me with this, would be the career center. I have basic computer skills such as knowing how to use Microsoft office. I can type without looking at the buttons. I don’t have any problems regarding computers. Interesting activities I would like to go to are school games. It would be fun going out there to support my fellow college mates. I think this would be apart of my college life because I attended many games when I was in high school. I think I can manage school work and going to the games. It’s like if you don’t go to a game, you missed out on a lot that happened. The library service I would be using in the next years would be the study rooms and quiet floors. In the next years I would have more complicated courses and would need the library for studying time or even doing researches. I’ve asked a friend where I can locate the best of these places. Best place to exercise- the schools gym. Best cheap hot breakfast- Dennys. Best pizza- pizza Chicago. All night food store- 7 Eleven. Best place to dance- All of the clubs in downtown San Jose.

Prologue Your Journal
The changes that have taken place in my life since I started college are the schedules. Instead of the counselor giving you your schedule, I make my own and choose my own classes. Changes that also took place in my life is adjusting to the college life, and living with strangers. No more going to your mother when you need her. It’s all about learning how to be an INDEPENDENT WOMAN. What excites me the most about my life are the random things that just pop up; for example, going to a haunted house 12 in the morning, or a haunted lake. What excites me about college opportunities are the event that’s happening almost everyday.
Prologue Know Yourself
Top 5 most important personal values are:
1. Having good friendships and getting along well with people
2. Being creative
3. Being happy
4. Dedication and commitment
5. Having personal responsibility
I learned most of these values from my mother and grandparents and from personal experiences. I thought about these values very well and it means everything to me. If I’m not happy, I can’t have a have good friendships or get along with people because I will always be grumpy. Yes, I am living up to these personal values and I always try my best at it everyday to live up to it because it’s just who I am.

First week of College
What I’m not used to here at San Jose is the weather. It’s so hot here and where I’m from, it’s about 65 degrees. Anything above 70 degrees is called HOT! I walked around campus and I already gotten sun burned. My skin is so sensitive like my mothers. We tend to get red, dark and our skin peels if we’re in the sun too much.
